JazzFest Heritage Music Weekend

Strike out for the city’s southern shoreline and the family friendly JazzFest Heritage Music Weekend (Saturday, August 2–Sunday, August 3), where jazz aficionados from around the world and Chicago converge for music, food and—new this year—an opportunity toa young girl and boy splash around in their swimsuits at one of Chicago's lakefront beaches. Tip: Sunbathe or splash around in Lake Michigan at the site’s petite beach. Bathing suit required.

On July 24, 50 Years of Bossa Nova featuring Paulinho Garcia’s Orquestra Brazzilli, Brazilian-born Chicago guitarist and singer Garcia blends jazz sensibilities with his native rhythms to take you back to the birth of bossa nova.

Chicago Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble

Then, follow Chicago Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble with special guests on their quest to incorporate Afro-Cuban jazz, Brazilian jazz, flamenco, Central American, and Peruvian folkloric rhythms while staying true to Latin jazz traditions.

Trace the evolution of a Chicago-born jazz revolution that connected new music with ancient musical traditions with Kelan Phil Cohran and The Legacy of Sun Ra (August 14). This multidimensional performance includes an 8-piece brass band, dancers, an African griot, vocalists, and instrumentalists.

Mike Reed's People Places and Things Octet

a trumpetAnd finally, rediscover the sounds of 3 Chicago jazz giants— trumpeter Art Hoyle, multi-instrumentalist Ira Sullivan, and trombonist Julian Priester—through new compositions and reinventions of their earlier music. Chicago saxophonists Greg Ward and Tim Haldeman, bassist Jason Roebke, and trombonist Jeb Bishop complete drummer Mike Reed’s People Places and Things Octet.

Test out your versifying skills at the Uptown Poetry Slam, hosted by Marc Smith, who invented Slam in the 1990s. Compose on your feet during open mike, hear guest performers, or join in Marc’s signature audience participation games.
