It’s worth a detour to the Near South Side for The Velvet Lounge, presenting gigantic talents playing free jazz and more 7 nights a week. Club owner, famous saxophonist Fred Anderson, also performs.

X marks the spot at The Green Mill. This Chicago landmark presents jazz nightly, from traditional to experimental, amid a “speakeasyesque” décor. Eat beforehand and come as you are.

Ain't misbehavin' at the goodman theatre
Travel back in time at the Tony Awardwinning Goodman Theatre’s presentation of Ain’t Misbehavin’, a delightful homage to the music of jazz singer, composer, bandleader, and stride piano great Thomas "Fats" Waller. Chuck Smith directs this trip to 1930s Harlem featuring such classics as "Honeysuckle Rose" and "Mean to Me."

an evening with the Wayne SHorter Quartet
Spanning an entire city block, the worldclass Symphony Center caps off its jazz season with An Evening with the Wayne Shorter Quartet on Friday, June 6.
Tenor saxophonist extraordinaire Shorter, who has played with the likes of Art Blakey and Miles Davis, and who created the renowned fusion group Weather Report, performs his own compositions at this 75th birthday celebration. Arrive early to browse at the on-site shop, relax with a drink at the Bass Bar, or dine at Rhapsody.
Tip: If you miss this show, starting mid-June you can purchase tickets for the special Keith Jarrett 25th Anniversary Concert featuring Keith Jarrett, piano; Jack DeJohnette, drums; and Gary Peacock, bass.
